"I want dessert in Kyoto" — when that thought strikes, the options are surprisingly limited. Most sweets come as the final course of a set menu, and it's hard to find a place where you can simply order dessert on its own or add it easily at the end of a meal.
At Bello Vero, the Italian restaurant in Kitashirakawa, Kyoto, desserts are served à la carte. No set menu required — you can order just one dish.
Strawberry Semifreddo — An Italian Dessert
Semifreddo is an Italian dessert whose name means "half cold." Unlike ice cream, it is not frozen solid — it is served in a softly chilled state. A spoon slides in without resistance, and it melts slowly on the tongue. That texture is the heart of this dessert.
A thin line of strawberry coulis — a sauce made from strained fruit — is drizzled over the semifreddo. Crumble and pistachio are scattered on top. The smoothness, the crunch, the acidity of the strawberry — different textures and flavours layer together on a single plate.
Strawberry & Crumble Semifreddo / Contents may vary depending on the season and availability of ingredients.
Just Dessert, or After a Full Meal
Bello Vero is fully à la carte. Whether you come after pasta and wine to finish the evening, or visit specifically for dessert — both are equally welcome. The sweetness is restrained and won't weigh you down after dinner.
Open continuously from 1 PM through the evening, making it easy to stop in during a day of sightseeing.
An Italian Restaurant in Kitashirakawa, near Ginkakuji
About 15 minutes on foot north of Ginkakuji (Silver Pavilion), and around 12 minutes from the northern end of the Philosopher's Path. Located just north of Kyoto University, this neighbourhood had almost no casual Italian options. Bello Vero opened in April 2026 and operates à la carte only, with no set courses.
